Recently I attended a workshop and we were asked to walk around the room and count how many red things we could find. At first glance, I didn’t see anything that was red. As I began to walk around the room, I noticed the exit sign above the door and a red purse sitting on the floor. Then I noticed the red tops to the pens that were provided to each attendee. They were in front of EVERY chair- dozens of them.
As I continued to count, red things started jumping out everywhere!
When the instructor asked us to take our seats and share how many red things we had counted in the room, it seemed as if everyone had almost the same experience. They did not notice anything red immediately, but as they began to really focus on the color, red things stood out all over the room.
We learned something from the activity that I think can help us all. Whatever we focus on grows. If we look for the evidence, we will find it. It really just depends on what kind of evidence we want to find. If we believe people treat us poorly, we will find it. If we believe people treat us well, we will find it. If we believe that mostly bad things happen to us, we will find more of that. If we believe that our life has many blessings, that is what we will find.
Whatever we choose to focus on will begin to jump out everywhere!
