“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.” -Camille Pissarro
As a licensed mental health professional, I am required to get a certain number of continuing education credits each year. Several years ago, I attended a particular workshop that really stands out in my mind.
We were asked by the workshop facilitator to walk around the conference room and count the red things in the room. At first I only saw the red exit sign above the door, but as I began to focus on the red, I noticed a woman’s red purse on the floor. Then I noticed another woman’s red fingernails as well as a red scarf.
All of a sudden, red was jumping out everywhere.
When we all sat back down, it seemed as if all the participates had had the same experience. We noticed only one red thing at first- the exit sign. But as we continued to focus on the color red, it began to jump out everywhere.
We were asked to do this little exercise to show us that whatever we choose to focus on grows. If we focus on resentment, fear, difficulties, and other negative things, they will grow. If we choose to focus on the blessings, they will also grow.
Whatever you are looking for, you will find. You get to decide whether the red in the room will be positive or negative.
If you choose to spend the day looking for blessings, you will find them. Within every adversity there is a seed of opportunity, if you are willing to look for it.
Go for a walk. Look at something in nature. Appreciate something you have today that you would miss if you did not have it. Take nothing for granted. Blessed are they.
