With all of the holiday season hussle and bussle, I have spent very little time in silence. It would be very easy for me to spew out dozens of reasons why I could not make this happen, but when it boils right down to it, there is only one explanation. I have not made it a priority. I want to share with you some of the things that Dr. Wayne Dyer has to say about silence and meditation.
Dr. Dyer says…
“You cannot come to know God through the experiences and testimony of others. This must be done by you. I urge you to meditate because it will bring you more peace, remove stress, improve your surroundings, and deflect negativity. All of this and more will definitely show up when you meditate regularly.”
“Meditation not only affects you, it impacts everyone around you. When you’re at peace, you radiate a different kind of energy than when you’re stressed or depressed. The more peaceful you become, the easier you can deflect negative energies of those you encounter. This is like having an invisible shield around you that nothing can penetrate unless it’s a higher spiritual energy than your shield. A hostile current is greeted with a smile and an inner knowing that this is not your stuff. A person who attempts to bring you into misery cannot succeed without your agreement. Your meditation practice keeps you immune.”
Thank you, Dr. Dyer. I needed to hear these words today.

This is very wise counsel. As a painter, I spend a lot of time in solitude; I live and work on a quiet bend of a river, and the sound of the birds is a soothing comfort of background sounds. Those same birds are also my natural alarm clock; this morning the kingfishers were quite raucous, though the sound is a sweet one.
When I do not have my quiet time and am removed from contact with the earth, I feel less grounded. After a few weeks of not having time to myself, I feel quite unbalanced and crave that connection with the earth.

This is so true Kirstin. Like you and countless others at this time of year we are so busy, busy, busy that it is all too easy to forget to make time for ourselves. Then we wonder why we feel out of sorts!!
The reason is that we have forgotten to take care of ourselves, to make time to connect with ourselves, and that is a recipe for disaster, as the good Doctor Dwyer reminds us.
I’m glad I read this. It reminds me that making time for myself is not selfish. If I am no good to myself then I am no good to others. A timely reminder.

In this sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita Lord Sree Krishna is describing the system of meditational yoga to His friend Arjuna. Here, in this verse, Krishna is establishing that the mind is the central point of yoga practice. The purpose of the yoga system is to control the mind and draw it away from attachment to sense objects.

I am always looking for a quiet place to spend time. In the house I choose the place farthest from the TV or the radio. Outside I prefer my garden to the park. Too much noise is very stressful.

Silence is scary sometimes, isn’t it? We wonder – is it okay to be ALONE (and not lonely). Yet, when we relax into it, appreciate the silence, we do hear and learn so much.

so very true. I used to dread silence because then I’d have to listen to the negative critic inside. I jumped into the drama around me and absorbed others’ emotions like a sponge. I was forced into silence when almost anything was too much stimulation for my very ill brain a few years ago. Since I’ve been practicing meditation, silence is truly golden. My sick brain has healed, The monkey brain has been tamed and as I have learned to love myself, the words inside are mostly loving and affirming. I am a calming presence to those in my midst.
